Road conditions for January 3

New snow today. Please post updated road conditions for today in the comments section below. Please assume conditions are getting worse.

EDITED:
I've removed the summary from yesterday as the new snow has changed things. Check the comments for each day to see if your road is there.

Also please comment just on road conditions. Thanks to all who are contributing. Currently there is also a little team working on a Google maps mashup that will allow users to colour code road sections. We'll announce it here when it's ready to go.

  1. David Road is icy compact snow.

Miller Road has patches of icy snow but quite grippy even with all seasons.

Cove area has patches of icy snow but also quite grippy with all seasons.

  2. Smith Road, (on way to Xenia) is packed ice all the way and impossible without a 4x4 with high clearance. Village Drive is clear--there is only one lane getting up to Rivendell however, and it's icy too.
    (thanks for this blog Chris!)

  3. Coming off the 8 pm ferry tonight, Bowen Trunk Road had this weird coating of powdery snow, but the snow tires work fine. The hill up past the school was dry and easy driving, as was the hill up to Charlie's Lane. The final hill on Grafton before the road changes into either Cowan Point Rd (Bishop's Hill) or Adams Road was starting to get a bit icy. Adams Road was quite dramatically snowy despite being plowed nice and wide most of the way. Whitesails Drive was a bit narrower, and dry at least down as far as Reef Road. (We didn't dare the Reef)
Back on the road for home, the upper half of Bowen Bay Road is quite snowy, and rather narrow on the curvy bits, but snow tires were fine. The bottom part of the road was dry, but might ice up by the morning so close to the ocean. Bluewater proper (Windjammer Road) has large flattened lumps of ice, so drive it slowly.

  4. Mid island: Cowan Rd not plowed; only for 4 by 4s up half way only.

Willies' Way has now been plowed; good for sledding, as it has 6-12 inches of packed snow on the surface. 4 by 4 material for cars.

  6. Jan 3, 9:00a: Just back from QCH to firehall drive. QCH to Cove: about 4cm fresh dry snow; slippery, but no trouble in FWD w/ 4 snow tires. Cove to firehall: v. light traffic compacting snow; more slippery, but still drive-able. Saw 2 plows out and about.

  7. Jan3: Bus service suspended as of 10am. Roads slippery, our 4x4 went in the ditch on Mt.Gardner Rd while moving over for the plow. The bus is parked until more sanding or salting.
Watch here and the forum for service updates.

  8. Correction: Bus service still running for the moment, but is being done by Peter in our 4x4 truck. See forum (Bowenonline) for details of his route. I don't want to type everything twice and don't know how to c&p that info to here. :)

  15. Just came off the 2:30 ferry and crossed the island to Tunstall Bay. "Snow packed and slippery" would describe the road, I think. Buses were sitting (covered in snow) in the Cove. A plough (plow?) passed us at the Firehall and so most of the eastbound lane was clear all the way to Tunstall. Westbound lane was pretty good.

Kudos to the heroic shovellers along Adams Road, by the way. Almost all the cars - I think ALL the cars - are off the road. This means that stretch, at least, is two lanes wide. I am sure the plow drivers (ok, we'll settle on "plow") appreciate that.

AS always watch for pedestrians. Pedestrians please wear light coloured clothing and carry lights and walk facing traffic.
