Hummingbird Lane not plowed yet - lots of snow. SUV went by a few minutes ago and was slipping while applying brakes. Turned around I guess at September Morn, seemed to not have any trouble as it passed our place heading toward Taylor.
Whitesails and Tunstall Drive clear with slushy sections. Mostly two lanes except where cars are parked on the road (mainly down near Tunstall and Reef Rd area).
Reef road is plowed and salted. Not bare, but a Honda Odyssey (2WD) went by me, going *up* the Reef, so I guess it isn't too terrible.
Light snow, gusty winds, and not much melting happening, at West Side Road and Bowen Bay road... feels like we've missed the warm time of the day for melting!
We drove in from Bluewater to the Cove at 2pm, and the plows are trying to widen the narrow bits up Bowen Bay Road and on Adams. The section between the Bishop's Hill turn-off and Harding Road is clear. The snowbanks mid-island are formidable and there is a light coating of snow mixed with sand on the roadway. The recycling depot road was not plowed since the last snowfall, but the low-slung Prius had no difficulty getting in and out with its winter tires. The General store parking lot is pretty messy and covered in icy lumps mixed with slush, while the Ruddy parking lot is almost pristine.
As of about 3 pm, Miller's Landing was slushy but drivable, and Seven Hills to the Cove was pretty clear. The road to Artisan Square had been plowed but the road wasn't completely clear.
Lower Adams Road (Sealeigh Park area):4pm Sunday. Large sections of the road still white, very icy. Sleet and gusty winds currently. If you have a minivan, or old all seasons don't attempt it.
Just got towed up Hummingbird Lane. Packed snow with a fine icy covering of freezing rain coming in on the storm. Impassable in all season tires, and even awd and large trucks were having problems. Dorman Road from the Cove to Taylor Road is clear.
5pm, Tunstall Bay. The "rain" (which is very white and fluffy for rain) is coming down heavily. The plows have been out to Tunstall, both directions, and have moved the "rain" to the side of the road but it continues to accumulate on the road. Snain it is. 0 degrees by my back door.
6:15pm, Tunstall Bay. The heavy plow just went by, in both directions. And Peter's bus just went by. The snain continues, edging more and more to snow. Temp holding at 0 here.
Around 7:45 after an awesome dinner at Blue Eyed Marys (note to self....get there at least 3 times a year.. it is so good)....the road to Eaglecliff was very slippery. There were some cars off the road (I wasn't driving and had a full car so couldn't stop). Huge snowflakes! Those amazing road crew workers will be at it all night, I'm sure!
10:40pm, Tunstall Bay. Plow hasn't been by in a while. Temp +1 and now it really DOES seem like rain. The road is covered in about 1" of heavy wet snow, but is pavement underneath. As long as the temperature stays about 0, we should be OK. Higher elevations, interior of the island will need to be careful.
11:36 pm - Hummingbird really slippery, got out (barely!) and actually got to the cove but car started sliding sideways going up Grafton. Have FWD and new tires but still a no-go. 4WD would probably be okay.

Just after midnight, so technically this is Sunday, January 4th.
ReplyDeleteTook the dogs for a walk and Tunstall Bay is plowed and salted, looks like recently.
Rain hasn't started (yet?), but it isn't snowing, either. Temperature outside my door is +2.
12:45am on Sunday - big plow, chains on, heads east out of Tunstall Bay.
ReplyDeleteMaking a lot of noise. I hope it isn't broken...
That's it. I'm going to bed.
Sunday - 7:50 am.
ReplyDeleteIt's melting! It's melting!
Ahem.
Whitesails Drive clear and down to the pavement, which is wet but not icy. Temp above zero. Light breeze, which feels warm.

ReplyDeleteMiller Road at Seven Hills: clear.
ReplyDeleteSpyglass / Windjammer loop: 10:40 am plow just came, 4 runs up and down, looks much better now.

Village Drive plowed and clear from top to bottom. Seaview Place and Harborview place packed snow, cleared in places, passable for 4wd or snow tires.

ReplyDelete4pm, Tunstall Bay: Wind is growing in the tops of the trees - things are falling on the house. Sleet coming in at an angle. +2 degrees.
